Gentoo penguin's watering hole, Petermann Island

Survival of the fittest is evident everywhere as skuas feast on the weakest link.

Gentoo chicks are molting, or losing their baby fluff. Many still have tufts of feathers on their heads, making them look like "Punk Penguins!"

Adelie penguins are smaller with solid black heads, and little blue button eyes resembling those of a stuffed toy.

"Tobogganing", the method where penguins propel themselves on their bellies, often outpacing a man running.

Penguin parents feed their chicks by regurgitating the contents of their stomachs into the mouth of the chick. If they miss, penguin chicks will not eat off the ground, which can lead to a lot of reddish brown muck on the ice.

You have to be careful when walking around Petermann Island. The wildlife is so tame that rocks can turn out to be seals! (see foreground)

There was a chart posted in the Observation Lounge where the crew plotted our progress each day.

The Captain comes out on the "wing" of the bridge to check our progress in moving through the ice flow.
